Constructed between 1792 and 1800, the historic White House has served as the residence of the President of the United States for over 200 years. Known at times as the President's Palace, the President's House and the Executive Mansion, the White House got its permanent name in 1901 when President Theodore Roosevelt made it official. History of the White House -
Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the idea of a Presidential home was imagined by President George Washington and approved by Congress in 1790. The White House was designed by architect James Hoban and construction began on the building in October 1792. The White House was completed in 1800, and President John Adams was the first President to reside there. The White House has survived two fires, several renovations, and millions of visitors throughout its storied history
White House Tours -
The White House is open to the public for free, guided tours every Tuesday through Saturday, except federal holidays. Citizens wishing to visit the White House must request tour tickets through their member of Congress at least 21 days in advance. Tours are offered on a first come, first served basis, and tickets can be requested up to six months in advance. Foreign visitors can request tour tickets through their home country's embassy. All visitors over age 18 are required to show valid, government-issued photo ID and foreign visitors must present their passports as identification. Tours are offered from 7:30am-11am, Tues.-Thurs.; 7:30am-12pm, Fri.; and 7:30am-1pm, Sat.

The White House Visitor Center highlights the history, architecture, furnishings and décor of the White House and offers insight into the relationship the White House has helped to foster with other nations around the globe.
