Variously described as "a Jewish Jane Austen" and "the English Philip Roth," acclaimed author Howard Jacobson might be more accurately (and simply) called a "genius." Winner of the Man Booker Prize, perhaps the most prestigious literary award in the English-speaking world, Jacobson is famed for his sharply realized, very comedic takes on modern society. Now he comes to Folger Theatre to read from his new novel, Shylock is My Name, a contemporary rendering of The Merchant of Venice which The Spectator declared "a serious comic masterpiece.' Playwright/director Aaron Posner, whose own retelling of The Merchant in Venice, the exciting new drama District Merchants, premieres at the Folger in May, moderates a must-see conversation following the reading.
