The Teatro Lirico of DC presents an evening of zarzuela -- a lyric-dramatic genre of theater sometimes described as a Spanish operetta. In a zarzuela, singers alternate between spoken and sung scenes, and depending on when it was composed, may resemble an opera (baroque, bel canto, verismo and even French or German), an operetta (similar to Gilbert & Sullivan or Offenbach), or a musical. For their annual fundraising gala, Teatro Lirico showcases some of the finest arias and duos from the Spanish lyric repertoire, presented by a cast of 12 highly prestigious opera and zarzuela performers who will bring into life memorable numbers by Spanish composers such as Chapi, Luna, Vives, Moreno-Torroba, Barbieri and Guerrero.
